FreightBazaar and DFAG sign MOU to spread awareness about transport emissions and trucking safety

Transportation sector is the backbone of an Indian economy. The transport sector in India consumes about 36.5 MTOe: Million Tonnes of Oil Equivalent, which represents 16.9% of total energy consumption. 94.5% of the transport emissions are contributed by road transport (2003-04). Furthermore, total CO2 emission from road transport in year 2003-04 was approximately 2.3 times more than in comparison to year 2000 emission. Thus, controlling and reducing road transport emissions is crucial for improvement of air quality in India.

The total number of registered motor vehicles on Indian roads has increased from about 0.3 million in 1951 to 210.0 million in 2015. Out of this, commercial trucks share is estimated to be more than 5 Million with a growth rate of 4.7% during 2013-14 and 7.4 % during 2014-15. Many of these trucks ply empty on roads in search of return loads.

Introduction of more efficient vehicles and fuels, such as CNG or battery operated vehicles, are some of the ways to reduce emissions. Furthermore, reduction in empty miles will reduce unnecessary waste of fuel and avoid resulting emissions.Another issue faced by the trucking sector in India is the number of road accidents. According to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the death toll rose to 14 per hour in 2009 as opposed to 13 the previous year. The total number of deaths every year due to road accidents has now passed the 1,35,000 mark. Trucks and two-wheelers were responsible for over 40 per cent of deaths. The NCRB report further states that drunken driving was a major factor for road accidents.

According to India’s Minister of Road Transport & Highways Shri. Nitin Gadkari,  "Accidents are killing more people in India than terrorism or natural disasters and yet we never talk about them," Mr. Gadkari has also said that “road accidents shave 3% off the country's GDP every year”.

FreightBazaar and DFAG recognize the potential for synergies in their shared goal of increasing efficiency in road-freight and in improving trucking safety.

FreightBazaar and DFAG both have the common goals of promoting efficiency and safety through areas such as reducing empty miles, driver training, optimum loading of trucks, reducing emissions and bringing innovative dimensions in the transportation industry. FreightBazaar and DFAG have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work together in these areas as well as to involve more stakeholders who can contribute in various ways to the cause of emission reduction and improvement in trucking safety.

"Trucks though constitute a small percentage of vehicles, contribute significantly to fuel-consumption, congestion and air-pollution in a city. I believe that the freight platform is the best way to go about it, creating a win-win for businesses and environment.” Parthaa Bosu, Innovation & Future Strategies Advisor, Domain and Functional Advisory Group (DFAG)

"FreightBazaar freight platform is designed and developed to make the long haul trucking operations more efficient which helps truckers reduce the empty miles.  By using technology based innovations, pushing for standardization across the long haul trucking sector and by creating awareness about safety issues, FreightBazaar intends to impact the entire freight eco-system in a positive way.” Says Bhaven Shah, Co-Founder, FreightBazaar.com.
